Description
Krichagin (1873) was the first to find O. nana in the Black Sea and he described it as O. minuta Krichagin, 1873. Later, Giesbrecht (1892), unacquainted with Krichagin’s paper, described the same copepod as O. nana. These two species are synonyms (Karavaev, 1895), but O. minuta T. Scott, 1894 is a separate species. O. nana is a eurythermic species that is widespread in the World Ocean (Nishida, 1985, Razouls et al., 2005-2007). Until the late 20th century it was among the most abundant copepods in the neritic zone of the Black Sea (Greze, 1971). Since the 1990s, O. nana has not been found there (Gubanova et al., 2002).
