The Black Sea zooplankton and phytoplankton (http://phyto.bss.ibss.org.ua) checklists are being created for marine biologists working with Black Sea plankton. The aims of Black Sea plankton checklists are to be the source of reliable species information, to fill the gaps within global checklists and to serve as the quality control tool for Black Sea plankton data.

Black Sea zooplankton checklist is being developed within the EU project Black Sea SCENE by Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (IBSS) together with Institute of Marine Sciences Middle East Technical University Turkey (IMS METU).

The checklist was created on the bases of wiki engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki). A wiki is a collection of web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites.

Species and relative information can be added to the Black Sea zooplankton list only by checklist editors. Editor accounts are created only by checklist administrator (o.sergeyeva@ibss.org.ua).

Species pattern:
Each species included in the Black Sea zooplankton checklist has the special description pattern where the following parts are included:

The only mandatory part is the filled taxonomy template. All other parts can be skipped and filled later when appropriate information is available.

Taxonomy, distribution, size, weight templates are written with the help of special templates. Fields used in these templates are structured and machine readable. All other information can be added in the free form (using simple wiki markup).

Preliminary zooplankton species list was taken from: Manual for zooplankton sampling and analysis in the Black Sea, compiled by Alexander Korshenko and Boris Alexandrov on the basis of the HELCOM Manual (http://sea.helcom.fi/Monas/CombineManual2/PartC/anxc7.html)
